Why does a large-scale character print on both pieces read from across the shop?

Because both pieces share one fabric at one weight, they shrink by the same amount in the wash and keep the same hand and the same drape over time. Sets built from a top in one weight and shorts in another do not: after the first laundry cycle the two pieces sit differently and the set looks assembled. The combing step removes short fibres before spinning, which is what keeps the surface from pilling at the seat of the shorts and the underarm of the top, the two points where a newborn set wears first. At 180 to 190 GSM the fabric has enough body to hold the large print flat without the motif distorting on the stretch.
How does a single-size newborn pack simplify the counter?

Check that the print on the top and the print on the shorts are the same shade of grey on the same shade of ground, because both pieces should come off one printed bolt and a shade step between them means they did not. Check that the placket lies flat when buttoned and that the buttons are evenly spaced from the neck to the hem, with the top button close enough to the neck binding that the top does not gape. Check that the shorts waistband is fully enclosed elastic. Check that the neck binding is the same colour as the ground and the same rib construction as the placket facing.
