What is a tone-on-tone all-over print and how does it read on a rod?

This set is printed at the fabric stage: the pattern is applied to the interlock before the panels are cut, in a darker shade of the same base colour. Yellow on yellow, blue on blue. From across a shop the set reads as a solid colour with texture. Up close it resolves into small motifs, speech bubbles, stars, paper planes and short words, scattered evenly across every panel of the top and the shorts. That is the opposite of a character print, which is designed to be read from a distance. A tone-on-tone set is for the parent who wants a pattern the baby can wear with anything and who does not want a cartoon on the chest. On a hanging rod it sits between the plain sets and the printed sets and pulls from both groups of buyers.

Why cut the top and the shorts from the same printed fabric?

Both pieces of this set come off the same bolt of printed interlock. The top and the shorts share the base shade, the print shade and the print scale, so the set matches as one fabric rather than as two pieces made to coordinate. That matters in the wash: two pieces cut from one dye lot shift shade together, so after twenty washes the shorts are still the same yellow as the top. Sets assembled from a printed top and a separately dyed plain short do not hold that match, and the mismatch is the most common reason a parent stops pairing the two pieces and the set stops looking like a set. The retailer sees it as fewer complaints about pieces that no longer go together.

How does a fabric-stage print differ in hand from a surface print?

A print applied to the fabric before cutting soaks into the yarn. There is no film on the surface, so the printed area feels exactly like the unprinted area, and there is nothing to crack, lift at the edge or peel after repeated washing. The 40s semi-combed cotton interlock at 150 to 160 GSM keeps its full stretch across the printed area because the print has not stiffened it. A fusing or sticker print, by contrast, is a bonded layer with a distinct hand, which is the right choice for a bold chest graphic but not for a pattern that covers the whole garment. For a set that is worn against skin over the whole torso and legs, the fabric-stage print is the one that feels the same everywhere.

What is the shelf economics on a 15-piece all-over print set?

The pack is five pieces each in S, M and L, with the five colours running once through each size, so one box gives one of every colour in every size. Retailer markup on this set runs 60 to 90 percent. The set sits at the semi-combed price tier, below the combed interlock sets, and the all-over print lets a retailer place it above the plain sets on the shelf at the same wholesale cost. The store-wide minimum order value is Rs. 2,000, so a shop can open with a single pack and see which of the five colours moves before ordering deeper. The button front-open V-neck top is the closure most first-time parents ask for, which makes this a set the retailer can hand over without a demonstration.

When should a retailer stock this set alongside the character print set?

The V-neck front-open top and shorts set with fusing print and this set share the same fabric, the same closure and the same S, M, L pack. They differ only in print. The fusing set carries a bold multicolour graphic on the chest with plain shorts; this set carries a tonal pattern over both pieces. Stocked side by side, they cover the two ends of what a parent asks for in a printed set without the retailer buying two different fabrics or two different size runs. The pull-on top and shorts set adds a no-button option at the same tier. Three sets, one fabric, three closure and print combinations.
